You Be My Good Boy

These are some of the last words that I ever heard my step-grandpa say to me. Growing up, he made it a point to utter these words whenever we would part company. I have tried to carry on the tradition with my children. This morning I had the opportunity to be a proud parent and wonder if this words of wisdom were instrumental in the situation that I'm about to mention.

This morning my 4yr old son was discouraged on his way to school, so I tried to cheer him up. I reminded him that there is always something to focus on that can lift our spirits. I mentioned the toy dinosaurs in his pre-school room. He informed me that they had been removed from the room. Someone had stolen a few of them. He also told me that he had stopped another child from stealing some papers. He had told the kid to stop and then foiled his plan by telling a teacher. After the teacher thanked him, he said he didn't know what to say. He told me that he was proud of himself for doing a good thing. He also told me that the teachers now check each kids pockets and backpacks for toys, etc... However; he told me that they don't check his because he's a good boy!

It's moments like these that I cherish. It makes it all worthwhile.
